A Paving Legend joins the team!
Kim mohor littlehampton bricks and pavers

Enter: Kim Mohor.

Kim is a highly skilled local pavior who has been a champion of Littlehampton Bricks and Pavers’ products for over 15 years. You might remember him from a previous newsletter back in 2014 in which he gave us a video interview on-site. You can check it out here[LINK]

Kim isn’t just an experienced pavior, but a great South Aussie small business owner. This means he brings a wide range of skills to the team including; employing workers, organising excavations, contractors, building retaining walls (brick, sleeper, interlock and stone), stormwater installations, excavator and bobcat operation, working with private builders on a lot of new and important heritage job sites and more!

Kim also does the paving demonstrations for our customers at the yearly February sale and puts together all our displays of our products. It’s safe to say, he’s done it all!

An opportunity arose and we grabbed it! Kim agreed to join our team recently to cover for our yard supervisor Paul Cavuoto who went on a very-well deserved 5 week overseas holiday. After the 5 weeks spent learning the forklift and other operations of the yard, Kim is now learning the intricacies of sales, customer service and our ordering systems.

Kim is an absolute natural at customer service and working together with people to make sure their project is a success. In the last 15 years our customers have only had excellent things to say about Kim and his work, so we know he’ll be great!
Soon Kim is likely going to be going on the road with our fantastic sales agents Wayne and Joe to further his development. The goal is for Kim to learn all aspects of Littlehampton Bricks and become another flexible addition to our great team!
If you want to say hi to Kim or ask some advice about your project feel free to drop into the office or email: sales@littlehamptonbrick.com.au.
Welcome aboard, Kim!

Project of the month

WAX DESIGN wins award for Victor Harbour Main Street using our Pavers!

WAX Design Studio has won the AILA SA Urban Design Landscape Architecture Awardfor their project revitalizing the Victor Harbour Main street. (pictured below)
Victor Harbour Main Street littlehampton bricks and pavers

“The Victor Harbor Main Street Project looks at rejuvenating the precinct with the aim to achieve a number of key objectives in relation to increasing connectivity, improving amenity, providing activation as well as creating pedestrian and vehicular access within a contemporary public realm that reflects the cultural, character and aspirational values of the town.”

AILA SA had this to say about the award:
“This project is the outcome of four years of considered thinking, planning, consultation and design. It has transformed the heart of Victor Harbor into a bold, pedestrian oriented place that skillfully resolves issues identified through careful research and community engagement. The design has encouraged people to return to the town centre and the social and economic benefits are clearly evident.”

For this project they chose to use our Mahogany paversWe wrote about this in a previous newsletter which you can view here [LINK]. They created a subtle striped effect but choosing to batch the natural colour variations of our Mahogany pavers together in blocks of similar colours. It was a very clever way to work and use a natural product to create something you couldn’t achieve with conventional materials.

We would like to congratulate the Wax Design team and the Victor Harbour Council. We thank you for choosing to use locally made products and supporting Australian business. There is no substitute for quality, and the success of this project demonstrates that.

June 2017 Newsletter – Joe: 75 and not out! Coachhouse bricks and more.

Meet Joe.

Joe’s one of our sales team members, in his 70’s and still giving 100%! Many of our customers will know Joe for his great sense of humour and infectious like-ability. He will always tell you straight, give great advice and make sure you crack a smile. He’ll have a coffee and chat with anyone as if they’re a long time friend, whether it’s a potential customer or not, he’s just got that kind of warm personality and genuine interest in people.
We sat down with Joe to ask him a few questions about how he keeps his youthful energy and manages to still be 75 and not out! You can watch the video below or read the transcript of our conversation.

‘A Chat With Joe’
Introduce yourself!
J: I’m Joe Coleiro and I’ve worked at Littlehampton Bricks and Pavers approximately 11 years.
How do you stay so young and active?
J: I’ll be 75 in May and I think passion comes within you. I enjoy people. I enjoy talking to people and trying to help people.
Has anything changed in the industry since you started?
J: One of the things in the industry that’s changed since I’ve been in it is the way they manufacture bricks nowadays. Most other companies just don’t do what we do. For example sort bricks by hand so that we make sure the product is 100%. We don’t just get them out of the kiln, wrap them up and send them out.
In order to move forward you have to be innovative. An example of that is that we are now trying to produce what we call a ‘slither’ (ultra slim face-only brick), so that they can be stick on or tilted up to a building.
What was your first project?
J: I think the first project I did was with Con Bastiras (Architect), he built a house with our coachhouse which was at Hyde Park. He’s used us a couple of times and since then it took off. That sort of brick (Coachhouse) is unique, and this is why it’s so popular.
Any advice for people building?
J: The advice I would give to people if they’re building -and I will be building very shortly as well- is to do their homework and see exactly what they really want. As far as colours and type of products. For these sort of items they should really ‘take stock’ and what they choose is gonna stay with them for the rest of their lives pretty well. So you’ve got to be very careful with what you do, whether it’s internal in the building or external.
Any final ‘words of wisdom’?
J: The only advice is to make sure you listen, that’s the advice I give to everybody. Whether you’re producing or selling. You gotta make sure you listen to what people are saying so then you produce what people want. And it’s come to bare too with Melbourne now. We send a lot of bricks to Melbourne and it’s coachhouse. That has taken off very well in Melbourne as well. So it shows that particular brick will never go out of fashion.
Thanks for the chat Joe and congrats on the milestone of 75 and not out! We hope you stay with us for a few more!!

Project of the month.

This month we’ve chosen a project using the brick Joe spoke about a lot: Coachhouse. It’s one of our darker colours and lends itself to a lot of modern architectural designs.
Given it’s unique, stylish chocolate, charcoal and brown tones it’s no wonder it’s so popular. Below are a few photos from projects using the coachhouse brick.
The below photos were sent to us by one of our distributors in Victoria: Hume Bricks and Pavers.

Have you got photos of a project you completed using our products? Send your photos to us! We’d love to feature them.

Edga has been a valued and fantastic member of the Littlehampton Brick Co family and we look forward to keeping him as long as he will let us! These days it’s uncommon to see so many long-term employees at a company (and we have a few more nearing the 20 and 30 club too!) we think it’s a lot to do with the culture here. We’re not just a South Australian business, but a family.

We had a little surprise for Chris too! Watch the video below!

REVEALED! The latest paving trend producing stunning results

This is something you need to know before starting your next paving project!

It’s no secret that natural high quality clay pavers are becoming more and more popular than ever. People have grown tired of bland, characterless cement and other plain coloured materials covering their driveways and surrounding their homes. They add no character to the property and can even end up costing home owners when it comes time to sell as the market is now more in tune than ever with: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

bland driveways dont help property price
Would you buy this?!

Gone are the days where close-enough is good enough, it’s a buyers market and they have every right to be picky. Buyers are looking for homes which require less maintenance and will stand the test of time. The problem with using inferior products is you generally get an inferior result. They crack, fade, erode and in some cases even become unsafe.

But there is good news!

The use of clay pavers is back and people are getting very creative with their designs and producing stunning, long-lasting results which look amazing and stand the test of time. One way which this is being done is by:

LAYING PAVERS ON-EDGE instead of laying flat!

Littlehampton bricks pavers being laid on edge adelaide

Traditionally pavers are laid one way, on their largest flat side and then positioned and cut to form a large range of patterns. What is becoming more common now is that homeowners and people building houses are asking themselves the question: “What can I do to stand out from the crowd?” Well one way to certainly do that is by getting creative and choosing to lay pavers on edge instead of flat!
